James M. Schmidt was a graduate of Bellarmine University (BA), Louisville, KY, and Duke University (BHS), Durham, NC. He served on the staff of Duke University Medical Center in occupational and environmental medicine where he specialized in management of on the job injuries, environmental medical issues and exposures, and work related trauma cases. During this time, he actively served as a preceptor for many Duke University PA students in their physical assessment courses, and participated in admissions activities for this program.
Mr. Schmidt served in the United States Navy from 1964 to1968 as a Hospital Corpsman, Field Medical Technician, and Clinical Laboratory Assistant. He was attached to the Marines in Vietnam as a Field Corpsman and Senior Corpsman of the Company in 1966-67. He entered the Duke University Physician Assistant Program in the 8th class, graduating in 1974.
Mr. Schmidt was a charter and founding member of the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants (NCAPA). He was honored with a certificate of appreciation for his loyal support by the NCAPA at their 25th year celebration.
