Viviana Martinez-Bianchi, M.D., FAAFP, associate professor of family medicine and community health, is the 2020-21 recipient of the F. Marian Bishop Leadership Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Foundation.

The award honors senior leaders who have significantly enhanced family medicine’s credibility by a sustained, long-term commitment to family medicine in academic settings. The award was established in 1990 in honor of Dr. F. Marian Bishop.

Martinez-Bianchi is being recognized for her many contributions to family medicine on a global, national and local stage, including her role and presence with the World Organization of Family Doctors, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations. Nationally, she is recognized for her work leading the health equity team of Family Medicine for America’s Health and the Starfield Health Equity Summit, and locally and across the state she has worked tirelessly during the COVID-19 pandemic in advocating for Latinx health equity.

As an educator, she is recognized for her commitment to medical education at Duke Health. She served the Duke Family Medicine Residency Program for 14 years—first as associate program director and then as program director—and now is director of health equity for the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health.

Judy Washington, M.D, FAAFP, president of the STFM Foundation, will present Martinez-Bianchi with this award at the 2021 STFM Annual Spring Conference in May. STFM is a national community of academic leaders committed to developing an accomplished family medicine workforce, prepared to serve as the foundation of America’s health care system.
