Grand Rounds: Creating PA Programs Around the World — "Adapting" the U.S. Model to Expand Health Care Access

March 12, 2019 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm
Ruth Ballweg, MPA, PA-C, professor emeritus, Dept. of Family Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine
Rugh Ballweg

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the differences between an “adapt” versus an “adopt” model of health workforce development and consider the flexibility of the PA model in responding to a country’s specific medical shortages.

  2. Recognize the six critical steps to fully implementing a “new” health profession — such as Physician Assistants — in a “new" country.  Consider the barriers and facilitating factors for this type of innovation.

  3. Recognize how Family Medicine, Public Health and Global Health entities within Academic Health Centers can interface with emerging health careers in low resource countries to maximize their resources and interconnectivity.
