Name: Kay Blackwelder-Young, RN, COHN

Position: Senior Occupational Health Nurse

Division/Program in department: Duke Occupational Health Services / EOHW-RTP Clinic

Start date: 1/2/2020

Years at Duke: I’ve worked at Duke on and off in various roles since 1973. I started at Watts Hospital as a med-surg nurse and moved to Durham Regional Hospital in 1975. I later worked as a same-day surgery pre- and post-op nurse there. Those roles took me into the early 1990s, and I moved to Employee Occupational Health and Wellness after that. I’ve worked in that area for over 20 years now. I left briefly to work with REX Healthcare, but returned to Duke in different roles a few years ago.

Where I worked prior to accepting this role: I worked as a contractor with Duke Temporary Services for Duke Occupational Health. I also worked part-time with Live for Life Health Fitness in 2019.

What I will be doing in this role: I’ll be seeing patients from client companies for their health assessments. I’ll be doing everything from checking vital signs and giving vaccines to audiograms and EKG tests.

What I most look forward to in this role: Being back home with the team at Occupational Health!

My first job: I started working on my family’s farm when I was about 10 or 11. In high school, I worked at a library. My first nursing job was at Watts Hospital.

My dream job: I love what I do now!

What I like to do for fun: I enjoy going to the movies, reading books, taking walks and spending time with family.

Favorite musician, movie, TV show, or book: Luke Bryan is my favorite musician. My latest favorite movie is Overcomer. It was great!

Something my co-workers probably don’t know about me: I have a twin sister. I am 30 minutes older than her.
