Eric Maier
Eric Maier

Name: Eric Maier

Position: Administrative Assistant

Division/Program in department: Employee Occupational Health and Wellness (EOHW), Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine

Start date: Feb. 5, 2019

Where I worked prior to accepting this role: Most recently I worked at Lenovo as a Human Resources Administrator and prior to that at Credit Suisse as both a Human Capital Analyst and a Presentation Specialist.

What I will be doing in this role: I will be supporting EOHW with general administrative support including data manipulation and analysis, FMLA processing, calendar management, and whatever else may come up.

What I most look forward to in this role: I’m excited that there are so many opportunities to use my diverse skill set to make a difference. I’m excited that the whole department is based on helping other people and I get to be a part of that, and I’m excited to be working with a bunch of great people.

My first job: I was 15 when I started working at Taco John’s in Lexington Park, MD. I started out as a basic employee, you know, make food, clean, sweep, etc. When I left for college a few years later my title was Crew Leader but technically I managed entire shifts, closed the restaurant, processed paperwork and food orders, etc.

My dream job: Live off the royalties from my book sales and have more free time for family, friends, community, and travel.

What I like to do for fun: I’ve been playing doubles sand volleyball between 2 and 20 hours nearly every week since 1990. I enjoy singing karaoke and know a wide variety of songs. Am I a good singer? Probably not. I also enjoy watching movies, playing board and card games, and traveling.

Favorite musician, movie, TV show, or book: My favorites change based on my moods and situations. Right now, my favorite song is "Have It All" by Jason Mraz. What a great, positive message! My favorite movie is probably "Sausage Party." You can’t beat falling down laughter for several straight hours. My favorite TV show is"Seinfeld." And my favorite book right now is "Speaker for the Dead" by Orson Scott Card, but, to be fair to all the other great books I’ve read, it IS the one I am currently reading (again).

Something my co-workers probably don’t know about me: I’ve self-published several titles on Amazon under the pen name Edward Gold, and I am currently in the illustration phase of publishing a children’s picture book. I am also currently working on a SF&F novel and several other children’s book, as well. Also, I spent two weeks in Zimbabwe a few years ago where I rode and fed elephants, walked and hugged 14-month-old ready-release-into-the-wild lions, had my hand inside a rhinoceros’ mouth as I fed it, mingled with warthogs and baboons at my canvas-sided condo, jumped head-first off a 175 meter cliff, and flipped a raft while white water rafting Class V rapids on the Zambezi River.
