Family medicine and community health leaders examine the importance of improving public health education

Anthony Viera, MD, chair of the department of Family Medicine and Community Health, Raman Nohria, MD, assistant professor, and John Vaughn, MD, associate professor, recently co-authored an article featured in Discover Public Health, a journal published by Springer Nature.

In the piece, the authors detail the benefit of establishing public health education as a core component of the undergraduate experience for students across the country. They argue that increasing health literacy will improve public understanding and evaluation of health information, enhance the overall health of communities, and strengthen support for future evidence-based policies.

"Public health education offers a framework for understanding how health systems are structured, financed, and regulated, and how these structures shape population outcomes," the authors noted in the article.
