Brittney Harrell, DO

Brittney Harrell

What is your hometown?

Fountain, North Carolina

What are your career goals?

After residency, I hope to spend time in private practice before delving into direct primary care. My long-term goal would be to become a medical director for a public health department.

What attracted you to the Duke Family Medicine Residency Program?

Duke offered much of what I was hoping for in a training program; OB training, rural medicine, the opportunity to do procedures and POCUS, all within a supportive environment. I left my interview with Duke raving not only about the curriculum but the amazing people that I would have the opportunity to train with.

In your opinion, what makes Duke Family Medicine special?

The people! Although Duke is a very large academic center, the family medicine program feels like very small and intimate. The program is very supportive, and everyone takes the time to truly get to know you as a person and just not as a resident physician.

What strengths or skills do you have that could be of benefit to the community?

Being from a small, rural, underserved town, I quickly learned of the health disparities and barriers that many families face and witnessed their distrust of the health care system. Early on, I vowed to be an agent of change and help bridge the connection between those who needed to be served and those who would serve them. I believe that my ability to relate to the surrounding community is one of my greatest strengths. I aspire to help those who may not usually have access or trust the health care system, all while teaching them out to advocate for themselves medically.

What are you passionate about?

I'm passionate about advocating for others while also teaching them how to successfully advocate for themselves. Nothing brings me more joy than making a person feel heard and seen, even if it's only a brief interaction.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Spending time with my family and siblings, trying new restaurants, watching movies, and pickleball!

What is something interesting that not many people know about you?

I'm a HUGE WWE fan!
