What is your hometown?
Greensburg, Indiana
Education and Training
Indiana University School of Medicine, Doctor of Medicine
Indiana University Bloomington, Bachelor of Science
What are your career goals?
My main goal is to become a competent and well-rounded physician who can handle a wide variety of medical conditions and complex situations. Within family medicine, however, I have a particular interest in rural medicine and hospice/palliative care.
What attracted you to the Duke Family Medicine Residency Program?
Firstly, I wanted to make sure that wherever I trained, it would properly prepare me for any situation and any practice location I ended up in. Additionally, I wanted a program that had the resources to support my specific career goals in case I ended up pursuing any fellowships. Finally, I wanted a program that would see me as an individual and provide stellar learning without having to sacrifice my wellness in the process. Duke checked all these boxes for me, so it was the obvious choice.
In your opinion, what makes Duke Family Medicine special?
I think one thing that you cannot glean from the website would be how supportive and understanding everyone is at Duke. They try their hardest to make sure you are not overwhelmed, that you have the support your need, and that you are set up to thrive during your intern year. Even when things are difficult or confusing, there is always someone who has your back no matter what.
What strengths or skills do you have that could be of benefit to the community?
My work ethic and genuine desire to be helpful. I want to improve and learn every day to become a competent and useful clinician. By listening to members of the community and learning what things are important to them, I hope to help provide the resources and care they need to feel empowered to take their health into their own hands.
What are you passionate about?
I am passionate about the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, hospice/palliative medicine, and serving rural communities similar to my hometown.
What are your hobbies outside of work?
Playing music, singing, (trying to) read, exercising, spending time with my wife and my relatives in Durham.
If you have lived in the area for a while, what is the best part of living in the Durham/Triangle area?
In my short time and previous visits, the fall weather was absolutely perfect compared to Indiana, so my wife and I are looking forward to that!
What is something interesting that not many people know about you?
I have sung at two weddings (although, maybe less impressive when I say one was for my sister and the other for a high school friend).
So far, what has surprised you most about Duke?
I think I was most surprised about how receptive the leadership is to resident feedback and how quickly they implement changes based on our input.
