What are your career goals?

My career goals are to practice family medicine in an outpatient setting. Specifically, in rural or underserved communities. I would also like to utilize my background in public health by becoming a part of leadership for community health programs and policies.

What attracted you to the Duke Family Medicine Residency Program?

What attracted me the most to the Duke Family Medicine Residency Program is resident diversity. Being a racial minority in medicine is challenging, so having co-residents who can relate and support was a big priority for me. I feel like I can be myself in this program, which is incredibly relieving.

In your opinion, What makes Duke Family Medicine special?

I believe that the variety of residency training settings make Duke Family Medicine special. There's opportunity to work at a big academic hospital, Duke University Hospital, and a community hospital, Duke Regional Hospital, all in one city. There are also opportunities to work in rural outpatient settings less than 30 minutes away. You really get the scope of family medicine in this program.

What strengths or skills do you have that could be of benefit to the community?

A strength of mine that could be of benefit to the community is my upbringing. I did not come from a background of medical professionals or higher education. I found that a lot of patients in the areas I would like to serve do not either. This allows me the ability to relate to and empathize with those patient populations in a unique way. Further closing the gap between medicine and the communities we serve.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about helping patients become empowered and knowledgeable about their health so they can nurture their wellness and improve their quality of life.

Where is your hometown?

Jacksonville, NC

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Attending local festivals and street fairs with my husband and 2 children.

What is something interesting that not many people know about you?

I ate termites fresh out of their nest on a girls trip in Costa Rica.

So far, what has surprised you most about Duke?

So far, I have been surprised the most about how big the Duke Health system is. I had no idea Duke had so many primary care outpatient clinics spread out over the Raleigh-Durham area. Also, I didn't realize how big Duke University Hospital is, I really get my steps in when I'm there.
