Truls Østbye is the Vice Chair for Research and Scholarship in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. He is a public health physician and epidemiologist from Norway, and worked in New Zealand and Canada before coming to Duke. He has led a number of large observational and intervention studies with a focus on risk factors and prevention of chronic disease, especially in the areas of cognitive impairment, aging and obesity. He is the faculty liaison with Duke Global Health Institute's partnership site in Sri Lanka, where his work relates to the health of vulnerable workers, maternal child health and the elderly. Named Master Mentor in the School of Medicine, he is the research mentor for a range of junior researchers and clinicians as well as graduate students across Duke's three campuses (Durham, Singapore and Kunshan).
