Will Bynum, M.D., to Assume Family Medicine Residency Program Director Role June 1, 2020; Lamercie Saint-Hilaire, M.D., to Become Co-Associate Program Director

Effective June 1, 2020, Will Bynum, M.D., will begin serving as program director of the Duke Family Medicine Residency. Bynum has served as co-associate program director since 2018. He joined the department in October 2017 after serving seven years active duty in the U.S. Air Force, during which time he completed his family medicine residency and then served on faculty at National Capital Consortium Family Medicine Residency, Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, Fort Belvoir, Va. He graduated from University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2010.

Since joining the residency faculty, Bynum has led several important initiatives including the residency curriculum reform committee. Additionally, he has worked closely with other residency leaders and the residency team on process improvement. As an educator of family medicine residents, medical students, and PA students, Bynum was the recipient of both the Golden Apple Faculty Teaching Award and the Pre-doctoral Family Medicine Preceptor Award in 2019.

Bynum’s primary academic interest focuses on how medical learners experience self-conscious emotion (shame, guilt, and pride) as they progress through medical training. He was the 2018 recipient of a Duke AHEAD grant which supported his latest project, The Shame Conversation.

"His research on medical education, shame, and resilience all align well with leadership in residency education and we are excited to have Dr. Bynum make this transition to program director," said Chair Anthony Viera, M.D., MPH, in an email to the department.

Additionally, Lamercie Saint-Hilaire, M.D., will become co-associate program director. Saint-Hilaire joined the department in October 2018 as assistant program director. She graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., in 2013 and completely residency at University of California, San Francisco in 2016. Saint-Hilaire has served as adviser to the Duke medical students’ Family Medicine Interest Group, and her passions include diversity and inclusion, addressing health provider bias through Allyship, and community engaged research on health disparities and health equity. Saint-Hilaire will be working alongside Cerrone Cohen, M.D., who will continue his service in the co-associate program director role.

"We want to thank Viviana Martinez-Bianchi, M.D., for her 6 years of service as program director," Viera wrote in an email to the department. "She has helped Duke Family Medicine Residency reach new heights of success and recognition as a leader not only in providing outstanding clinical training, but also in advancing health equity. The great news is Dr. Martinez-Bianchi will continue to be involved in our residency program and in training and mentoring of our residents. Importantly, she will further expand her efforts to promote family medicine and health equity locally, nationally, and internationally, including taking on key leadership positions in family medicine and primary care organizations."
