Now that spring has arrived, Duke Family Medicine Residency is preparing for a transition.

Our new residency chief, Josh Lancaster, M.D., and education chief, Vanessa Solomon, DO, are learning their roles from their outgoing mentors and will bring their own talents to share.

Dr. Lancaster is a graduate of the Temple University School of Medicine. His background is in biology and he performed clinical research both at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and in Denver, Colo., before joining us at Duke Family Medicine. He brings a highly collaborative leadership style to his role as chief.

Dr. Solomon is a graduate of Western University of Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. She has a background in both teaching and curriculum development from her previous employment as a teaching fellow of osteopathic manipulative medicine and as a project manager for international projects related to HIV/STI prevention and treatment.

Although technically their new roles don’t begin until July 1, Dr. Lancaster has already been instrumental in developing next year’s rotation schedule and Dr. Solomon is advising faculty on areas of resident interest for our upcoming residency orientation.

We heartily thank Bret Powell, DO, and Farhad Modarai, DO, for their year of service as chief resident and education chief, respectively.

Saying goodbye

We will be celebrating our third-year residents at a graduation ceremony in June at the University Club in Durham. They will be joined by their families and friends as we wish them well in their new ventures:

Jonathan Bonnet, M.D.: Sports Medicine Fellowship University of Florida, Gainseville, Fla.
Michele Fass, M.D.: Norton Community Medical Associates, Shepherdsville, Ky.
Aaron George, DO: Summit Health Primary Care, outpatient family practice in Chambersburg, Penn.
Brett Powell, DO: Duke Geriatric Fellowship, Durham

The new academic year begins with the arrival of our first-year residents on June 26. Social events are in the planning stage and more details will be announced soon.

Additional moves:

Joyce Copeland, M.D., has joined us as a CORE faculty member, has assumed an adviser role and will join in teaching our longitudinal curriculum, which is our Tuesday afternoon clinical curriculum that occurs throughout all three residency years. We welcome Dr. Copeland, her wonderful sense of humor and her years of expertise.
