Grand Rounds

Department of Family Medicine and Community Health Grand Rounds is held the second Tuesday of every month at 12 pm via Zoom. We aim to represent the breadth of our department’s divisions (Family Medicine, Community Health, Occupational Health, PA Studies and Student Health) in our Grand Round series. May 12 Karin Shapiro,  PhD and Lloyd Michener, MD "A Road Out”- The story of six South African innovative health practitioners who fled apartheid and came to UNC SPH Duke CFM during the civil rights movement and President Johnson’s War on Poverty, providing a model for America’s first community health centers and demonstrating the power of community engagement in primary care, public health, and research. An abridged version of the award-winning documentary will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker and historian, Karin Shapiro, and the past chair of Family and Community Medicine, Lloyd Michener, about this history and its implications for the contemporary practice and federal policies.
